Lincoln University partners with Figshare to launch research data repository

Lincoln University – reflecting its commitment to open access research – has launced its institutional research data repository, Data@Lincoln, powered by Figshare and available on a custom domain at https://data.lincoln.ac.nz.

Among the initial datasets in Data@Lincoln is a collection of weather data recorded at Lincoln University from 1960 – 2011. Daily climatological observations have been recorded at Lincoln University since January 1881, and earlier handwritten logbooks from 1928 – 1971 have previously been scanned and made available online.

As the first open access university in New ZealandLincoln’s open access policy ensures the research produced at the university is accessible and reusable by everyone.

Lincoln University’s  broad ethical position is that if public funding has supported the creation of an idea, research, or other content, then it is reasonable and fair that it be made publicly accessible.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Bruce McKenzie said:

“Data@Lincoln will let the university raise the visibility of the unique research being carried out at Lincoln University, increasing its impact by making it available for reuse and reanalysis by the public and industry.”

Lincoln University is also committed to helping its students grow and expand their opportunities and expects the free flow of information to facilitate this.

Researchers at Lincoln can upload their research datasets openly and with a reusable licence. They can also track usage metrics – views, downloads, citations, and Altmetrics – and datasets published in Data@Lincoln are marked for discoverability in Google Dataset Search.

Data and metadata can also be harvested in and out of Data@Lincoln using Figshare’s robust API. For more ways in which data is FAIRer (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) on Data@Lincoln, see this infographic.

“Lincoln University has a rich history of open access and we’re pleased to be able to further support that with the launch of their new open access research data repository,” said Mark Hahnel, CEO and Founder of Figshare.

Other research outputs from Lincoln University can be found in Research@Lincoln and Living Heritage.
