Current MSc and PhD Students in Horticulture
(and their Supervisors)
There is an Australian initiative underway to identify postgraduate students engaged in horticultural research. We are building up to the International Horticultural Congress in Brisbane in 2014, jointly hosted by NZ and Australia (http://www.ihc2014.org/content/welcome ). My role on the congress organising committee is academic liaison, and it would be very useful to have a similar database on this side of the Tasman. For example, one of its uses could be as resource material for promotional stories during the build-up to the Congress.
I'm keen that we keep the net wide for what are considered 'horticulture' students. I would argue that this includes:
Work on horticultural species (fruit, vegetables, cut flowers, amenity horticulture, New Zealand natives etc)
Work on model systems (such as Arabidopsis) where the questions are relevant to horticulture (e.g. nutrient uptake, hormone metabolism, photosynthesis, senescence)
‘Horticulture’ also includes many non-biological disciplines: agricultural engineering, postharvest supply chain management, lifecycle management, energy-efficient refrigeration, packaging, marketing of horticultural products
Finally, there is the whole area of horticultural products as food: process engineering for horticultural products, food safety, retaining nutritional or bioactive components for human health & wellbeing, demonstrating bioefficacy of horticultural extracts.
Clearly ‘horticulture’ does not include pastoral agriculture or cereal cropping, but as you can see, I’m casting the net pretty wide.
I have made a direct approach to key contacts at our Universities but would welcome a flood of additional names from students or their supervisors who are keen to be included on this register. The data I am requesting are:
